Engineering and design

Expert engineering support from concept to detailed design, helping you optimise performance, reduce risk and deliver sustainable solutions.

Our engineering and design team has a successful track record of service delivery across the asset lifecycle, from asset diagnostics and needs verification, feasibility and optioneering through to outline and detailed design, construction, commissioning, and operational support for infrastructure and non-infrastructure assets.

Engineering process

We support the following client drivers:

  • Environmental risk reduction
  • Sustainability, affordability, and social value
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Ofwat price reviews

We support tier 1 and tier 2 customers across the asset life cycle, providing multidisciplinary engineering and design services, including:

  • Process engineering: Mass balances, existing site overviews and sizing, site performance reviews, feasibility concept design to detailed design.
  • Civil engineering: Optioneering through detailed design, and site support during construction across the UK water and flood alleviation sectors.
  • HADES and modelling: Process and network hydraulics for wastewater and water treatment sites.
  • Structural engineering: Design analysis, including in-house reinforced concrete and steelwork detailing.
  • Mechanical engineering: Pump calculations and pipework sizing for water, sludge and wastewater applications. Integration of mechanical systems. Feasibility concept to outline and detailed design.
  • Electrical engineering and design: Electrical and ICA design including low-voltage and high-voltage distribution systems, network architecture and systems or software integration project engineering.
  • Design management, including principal designer duties.

How we can help

1 of 1

  • Conventional safety risk management: Construction (Design and Management) Regulations principal designer and designer duties, design risk reviews and assessments, health and safety file
  • Process safety risk management: Hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), layers of protection analysis (LOPA), Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR), application lifecycle management (ALM), construction hazard studies (HAZCON), failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), hazard communication (HAZCOMM), lightning protection assessments, and CompEx surveys
  • Producing and running HAZCOMM and can provide qualified chairpersons
  • Suitably qualified and experienced person (SQEP), including National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH), Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), and Energy Utility Skills Register (EUSR) National Water Hygiene scheme (Blue Card)

  • Net zero: Bioresources, green energy, best available techniques, carbon lifecycle management
  • Resource efficiency: Design for manufacture and assembly, waste minimisation
  • Nature-based solutions
  • Resilience: Flood risk alleviation; water resources treatment, optimisation, leakage
  • Pollution control: Municipal and industrial wastewater treatment; storm overflow spill reduction; bunding and containment

  • Optimum solution identification: Client and asset need verification, feasibility and optioneering assessments (six capital outcomes), site surveys and investigations, asset standards appraisal, best available techniques, supply chain intelligence, TotEx cost intelligence
  • Systems thinking: Integrated catchment solutions, leakage and infiltration risk reduction, drainage and wastewater management plans (DWMPs), water resources management plans (WRMPs), network modelling
  • Asset, site, and environmental surveys: Geotechnical, topographical, process flow and load, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control, automation (MEICA), sewer network, clean network, ecology and environmental monitoring
  • Infrastructure and non-infrastructure design: Process, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical instrumentation, control and automation (ICA) engineering and design services across clean and wastewater infrastructure and non-infrastructure

  • Delivery assurance: Design lifecycle management
  • Technical assurance: Technical assurance framework, design verification, technical appraisal, regulatory and standards compliance, Ofwat and Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) reviews
  • Regulatory compliance: Water industry national environment programme (WINEP), industrial emissions directive, Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI)
